The year before/a year before

Hi all

Could you please help me with this sentence? I am not doing the recollection now that is why I am not using "one year ago". I am wondering how I can refer to something that happened one year prior to the moment in the past that I am writing about.

"I recalled the amazing feeling I felt at the event a/the year before, and I wanted to experience it again."

Thank you.

Best wishes
