(the) worship

I have made up the example below.

(1) Last Sunday, I missed the bus to church. Although I got there quite late, I could participate in the worship.

My non-native English speaking friends think the definite article for "worship" is not required. But, I think it is necessary because I'm talking about that day's worship, not any worship in general.

What is your opinion? Thank you very much.

I would naturally include the article there. However, it is not wrong without the article. It would also be natural to include the word "still".
