the worms turned up?

Hi again,

"Then the the worms turned up in my home ec cake, and I got an F."

Can you paraphrase this sentence for me, please? As far as I understand, he got a bad mark from one of his lessons, but what does 'the worms turned up' mean?

If worms is not to be taken literally, I assume it means 'mistakes' or 'faults'.
