The words thanks

He was able to pass, thanks to his teacher's help.

While using past tense, is it okay to use 'thanks' in this manner? Or, must it only be in present tense?

Think of thanks to as a fixed expression -- a compound preposition unrelated to the conjugation of the verb to thank. You can use it the way you use any preposition -- in any tense.
