The word 'whether' and the article

Hi. Do we have to put articles after the 'whether' in the following situation?

Whether pen (a pen?) or pencil (a pencil?) ...
Whether man (a man?) or animal (an animal?)...

Also, can you give one sentence or two with the above phrases?
