the word via

Hi,

I see many sentences containing the word 'via' and want to know how to use it properly.

via telephone. (Sounds good.)

via group work (How about it?)

via a telephone call (Would say via telephone sounds better but how about it?)

via internet (Sounds good?)

Any guidelines for me to follow? Thank you

  • 'Via' means, in simple terms, 'by means of', and you wouldn't say 'by means of telephone'.
  • Generally speaking, the normal rules for the use of articles should be followed for the word after 'via'.

As an aside, via is originally Latin and even in English it can be used to mean 'by way of', 'going through', which is its original meaning in Latin: We drove to New Orleans via Memphis.

Thank you.

But I think many people were using the phrases 'via internet' and 'via fax' thinking they are correct and many are accepting them as valid too.

Why is that?

Hi,

Some peole use language more carelessly than other people.

If enough people say something a lot, then sometimes that even becomes accepted as the correct way to say it. Language evolves.
