the word 'valid'

When I want to share information that I've found,
would it be right to say 'don't know if this is valid(information) or not.

Have I used the word correctly in this context?

Yeah, you can use the word 'valid' like that. But be careful: it depends on the type of information you are sharing. It should be scientific-academic-formal information...

You WOULDN'T say: "Hey guys, I'm not sure if this information is valid or not, but I just hear that Kathy broke up with her boyrfriend!"
