The word "Thekedar"

Hi

The word "Thekedar" is VERY common in my country -- I want to ask if native speakers are familiar with it.

I have never encountered this word before. The dictionary shows that it is derived from Hindi, and is used in Indian English.

Hi Tom,

I don't know that word either. Actually, I'm a bit amazed that you managed to find it in the OED at all. If you try to look that word up using onelook.com, you come up empty.

This is the first time I've ever heard of the word. Had it not been for your dictionary link, I would have had no idea that it was even a word of English.

I seem to vaguely recall seeing the word "thikadar" before, in English literature written in an Indian setting.
