As for its use, any doctor, pharmacist or person needing a soporific knows the term, as well as many other educated people.

The word that came first to my mind was 'boring', although interestingly I didn't notice this in the Webster link.

eg I thought that TV program was really soporific.

In answer to the question about whether 'soporific' is in common use, I'd say it's not remarkable but at the same time it's not a word you hear every day.

It's one of those words
