The word scotch

Hi

Is the word scotch (verb) common among native speakers?

Rumors for a merger have been successfully scotched.

Thanks,

Tom

I would say it is a "middling" word that is neither common nor rare. It should be "rumours of a merger".

In my experience, rare.

As far as I can see from the evidence of Google, it is more common in BrE than AmE. A comment at http://english.stackexchange.com/questions/59079/why-do-we-scotch-a-rumour says the same, but then someone else disagrees...
