the word "ritzy"

Hello. I need to know more about the use of the word ritzy. Are the three following usage of this word correct/ wrong? “What a ritzy hotel”, “this is a ritzy gallery” and “my house is ritzy”

Top answer

"Ritzy" is an informal synonym for luxurious, elegant, posh, swanky, and stylish; however, in usage, I do not know if someone would refer their own home as ritzy. This word is typically used to refer to hotels, restaurants, opulent theatres or other performance venues, and places of the like. Its origin comes from the Ritz Hotel, so it tends to be an adjective that describes places, and is generally not used to describe people, clothing or other objects; whereas some of the synonyms above, such as elegant or stylish, could describe a variety of nouns.

My apologies for omitting "to" in the first sentence. It should have read, "....if someone would refer to their own..."
