the word "number" and its abriviation "no."

how come it's "no." and not "nu." ??

I usually use #5, even though the sign is also used for 'pounds'. Which usage came first? I'm not sure.

I don't see # being used for pounds (even though on the phone it's called the pound key).

For the currency, it's a stylized "L", for the measure, lbs.

I've seen # for "pounds" (the measure), in US documentation.
