The word "play off" used to describe a football player

I found a comment saying: "He seems to be more of a poacher but needs someone to play off."
Does the verb "play off" here mean "work with"? Is there any other meaning?

Hi, It seems that this comment is concerned with a football player, merely because of the word poacher . This player needs someone to react to in a way that helps him play better, I guess. Regards

Yes. More accurately "interact with", I would say.
