The word of "Afraid"

Can I say that "There are many students afraid of speaking English." I know that this is okay, "Many students are afraid of speaking English.", but I have never seen sentences like the first and I know that "afraid" can not modify nouns. So what do you think about the first sentence? Thank you so much.

Hi,

Yes, you're right. I read it too carelessly. Time for me to go to bed.
