The word "news"

Would it be "are" or "is" in this sentence:

There is/are some bad news for you.

I am aware that news is an uncountable noun and will take a singular verb, but others argue that when the word "some" accompanies "news" then a plural verb sits.

Please explain your answer in the light of grammar rules.
