I would like to know the grammar rules regarding the word "impression". I do not just need examples (I can come up with them all day), I need to explain to my ESL students why one would use "leave and impression" vs "make and impression", etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, It's ' an ', not 'and '. It's a matter of what is idiomatic, not a matter of grammar. Both 'make' and 'leave' are commonly used.

There's very little difference, leave an impression Stresses a bit more that the encounter is finished.
make an impression Does not stress this so much.
