The word HEADSPACE

"We were in a different headspace back in the day, hence we'd put out albums almost every year".

As of late, I've seen the use of the word 'headspace' a lot with a meaning, or asception I should say, that seems not to exist in the dictionary at all. Judging from the context I tend to see that word in, it may imply something along the lines of "mental phase; a stage in your life; a moment in which you see things in a certain way; focus".

Am I really right to say it's somewhat of a "new word"? Can anybody provide a better definition of the word or a synonym?

I am a native English speaker, but not an expert on language. My feeling is that "headspace" has recently been given a meaning that is not found within a traditional dictionary, just as you suggest. In the new form, headspace can be interpretted literally as "the space in ones head", which likely would refer to "thought process", "mentality", "where ones mind is at", "a collection of thoughts", etc.

  • It could also mean "a place where one thoughts can be found", such as a personal internet blog.
  • Headspace is not a new word since it is in the dictionary; however, I would say this is a "new" definition for the word that you might find in a dictionary in the future if its use becomes more popular.
