the word "great" before a name

While writing the word "great" before somebody's name, do we need to write "the" before "great"? For example, the great scientist Newton, the great philosopher Aristotle, etc.

It's not so much about the adjective "great"; the article is usually needed because of the singular, countable nouns "philosopher" or "scientist."
