The word "eligible"
Here's a sentence I just read: "Some students in the school district are eligible for free lunch."
When I look up the word "eligible" in a dictionary, it looks like it means something like "fitting" or "appropriate," but that doesn't really make sense to me. Does the sentence mean that these students "qualify" for free lunch or something like that?
