The word "But"

I have a question about the word "but" I had always thought that a comma went before the word "but". But recently, I saw the comma after the word " but" instead in front of it.

EX. He is dead, but not lost.He is gone, but not forgotten ( the way I think is correct
EX.2 He is dead but, not lost. He is gone but , not forgotten.
Which one is correct?

Hi, I have a question about the word "but" I had always thought that a comma went before the word "but". I wouldn't say a comma is always essential before 'but'. It depends on whether you want to pause for some reason.
