The word brung

I didn't even think this was a word. I would always use brought. When is brung used in a sentence, and what is its background?

Hi, The word is 'brought'. 'Brung' is found in some uneducated speech. It's an error that is sufficiently egregious for educated people to say it occasionally as a little joke in their very casual speech.

Sing, sang, sung
Ring, rang, rung,
Bring, brought, brought

It's easy to see why people can make this mistake - but that doesn't keep it from sounding like fingernails on a blackboard!

Possibly Texan. Here's a Molly Ivins (a Texan) book title: You Got to Dance with Them What Brung You.

Hi,

Based on GG's idea, I'd expect ' . . . them what brang you'. Emotion: stick out tongue

Brung, brang, brought are past participles, and can be used interchangeably.

However the "elite" always use brought.
