The word - away

Hi Everyone,

I'd like to know why the word 'away' is an adjective in this phrase:

The shop is ten miles away.

Dictionary.com defines the phrase, ....six miles away, as an adjective.

Doesn't my sentence answer the question - where/how far?

Slightly confused.
Emotion: sad

Hi GPY,

I can see it's talking about the shop, but I still can't see why it's not ad adverb here, simply because it still answers the question - where.

Personally I find this idea pretty hard to reconcile with my impression that "ten miles" modifies "away". I guess those advocating this theory don't see it that way.

Me, too. That's why, of the two explanations I found online and reported on, I prefer the second one.
