The word "abnegated"

Can I say, "I abnegated the truth"

Does it make sense? Or the usage of the word "abnegate" is incorrect?

This unusual word had me reaching for the dictionary. I'm still not sure if you mean 'I denied the truth', and if you did it doesn't make much sense out of context. I'd try to find a simpler way of saying it.
