The women want to hire bicycles and we men want ...

Hi all!

"The women want to hire bicycles and we men want to hire a boat."

Is there anything wrong with the above sentence?

I think it should be

"The women want to hire bicycles and us men want to hire a boat."

What do you think?

Do you think that this is correct?

Us want to hire a boat.

No.

Both my brother and I would naturally say "us men". We are both British.

I understand that "we" is the subject of the verb.

Would any other native speakers use "us" in this sentence?

Grammatically, the subject in a sentence has to be in subject case, not object case.

The use of object case is nonstandard. I know it's colloquially "heard on the street."

I wouldn't use 'us' in that sentence, no. I believe I may have heard that way of using 'us', but it must have been rarely because it's only ringing a very faint bell.
