The "without" comma

She stared at him for a moment, without saying a word.

Is that line better with our without a comma? I'm pretty sure it's optional, right?

OK. What if it were a longer sentence? For example:

She slowly walked backwards away from the desk, without breaking eye contact with him.

Do you still say to do without it?
