I am studying about relative adverbs now and have a question about it.
I learned that 'relative adverbs are where, when and why .' My quesetion is 'Is how also an relative adverb or not?'. If it is, the sentence " I don't know the way how he solved problem." will be all right. Is the sentence correct or not? But, in my grammar book, how is not in the relative pronouns. That means, the above sentence is wrong and I have to correct it into 'I don't know the way he solved problem.' or 'I don't know how he solved problem."
What is correct?
And the second question is, in a dictionary I read that 'the reason why' is redundant. Then do you usually use only 'the reason' or 'why' instead of 'the reason why'?
That is, among the next 3 sentences which one(s) is correct?
a. I don't know the reason why he left so early.
b. I don't know why he left so early.
c. I don't know the reason he left so early.
If all of them are OK, what are the most usual expression?
