The waves were striking him...

Hi

Would you say that these lines are fully natural, especially the red part? Any suggestions please?

The ferocious waves were striking him like full-power slaps on a bare back, tumbling him all around. He was blue in the face, gasping, struggling. He knew it was over. Soon the unforgiving ocean would be munching on his body.

Thanks,

Tom

PS: Or this: The ferocious waves were striking him like a whip on a bare back, tumbling him all around

  • Slaps cover more surface than a whiplash, and I think that's more consistent with the action of waves.
