The War of the movies of the War Of The Worlds

Hi everyone. It's good to see the list still going strong. Been meaning to catch up for a while.
Bert - did you ever get around to watching the UK version of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS? As opposed to the
Spielberg's/Cruise version which I'm bold enough to say is one of the most visually definitive Science Fiction movies too date, but alas has been thumbed down by many for the wrong reasons. Personally, I loved the ending; I like what Cruise bought to the character; and Spieberg weaved his snapshot magic within the context of the story. I'd be interested in hearing how the English release from Pendragon has weathered overshadowed
by the latter version.

[/nq] I'm afraid not. Did it go straight to DVD? I've seen no mention of any cinema release.

  • [/nq] I'm afraid not.
  • Did it go straight to DVD?
  • I've seen no mention of any cinema release.
  • For what it's worth I thought the Spielberg movie was quite dreadful, with the occasionally striking visuals completely failing to make up for the terrible plotting and the totally unsympathetic characters.
  • As I said in another thread, I spent the whole film willing the aliens to inflict horrible pain on that ghastly little girl, and then kill her and the rest of her moronic and self-centred family.

Yes, but you still haven't made it clear how you really feel about this movie. :~) The ambiguity in your posts is driving me nuts

Sorry, I'll try to be clearer in the future.
As an aside, isn't it a wonderful peculiarity of English that if something is "quite good" then it's moderately

Yes, but western, nuclear, and estranged don't have to equal thick, surely?

Well, I was far too polite to say that.

No, I paid that amount for a seat in the Odeon, Leicester Square in London. This was a weekday afternoon, and it wasn't the top price: in fact, I

What MC said; about 10 greenbacks. Cheaper out here in the sticks of Woodstock, NY. I haven't actually gone to a film in a theater in NYC for at least a year, so the price could be $11 or $12 by now.

Still, that's a lot cheaper than your price, which is basically $27!!

I lived in London in the 90s and I remember that lots of stuff cost basically the same number pounds in London a
