The War

Once Britian had begun serious bombing raids in Germany during World War II, they discovered they had a serious problem. The Royal Air Force was doing very well, but many of their planes were being shot down mid-mission by the anti-aircraft systems developed by the Nazis. And the planes that came back were quickly beginning to look like swiss cheese.

They had an option. They could put armor on the bottoms of the planes to deflect more bullets. However, armor weighs quite a bit, and increasing a plane's weight means reducing their range and number of bombs they can carry.

So they called in this mathematician, and he took a good look at the undersides of these planes. There were holes in the wings and all over the fuselage, distributed in a seemingly random pattern. He studied all the planes, then finally made a recommendation.

What armor plating, if any, does he suggest they put on these planes, and why?

Top answer

I guess the logical solution would be to put armor on the parts of the bottom of the airplanes that never had bullet holes. The reason for this is that the areas that had holes in them obviously weren't critical. Because there were certain areas on all the planes that didn't have bullet holes, the mathmatican rationalized that all of the planes that were destroyed must have been hit in those areas.
