The voice of God: paraphrase

Stanza

I sought to hear the voice of God,

And climbed the topmost steeple,

But God declared: "Go down again,

I dwell among the people."

Paraphrase

I wanted to meet God. For this I climbed up the tower of the church. But God told me to go down for He lives among his people.

Someone, please, correct the mistakes in this paraphrase.

Thanks.
