Vocabulary

the very (at the beginning)

Hi,

I was wondering if you would help me to know that what does "the very" mean when it comes at the beginning of a passage? When there is no references.

PS I have no sample sentence, it's just for studying demonstrative adjectives, so please give me an example that show proper use of that.

I try an example:
The very prison who can brake out the prison should be both mentally and physically strong.

Thanks

'Very' = precise; particular: 'That is the very item we want.'

"The very [thing]" also means "that same thing" as though to emphasize the significance of it being the same thing. As though it is surprising that it would be the same.

Let me try examples:
"He shot the very woman who raised him."

The modern uses of "very" stem from an archaic use to mean "genuine" or "true". There is also an archaic word "verily" from the same root (Latin for "truth"), as are the modern "verdict", "verisimilitude", and "veracity". It might help

Thank you a lot Doctor D.
Both interesting and confusing examples.
How should I understand the very in different situations?
And do they exactly mean the very things that you mentioned in the parentheses?

Anyway, thank you for your time. I guess it takes you considerable time.
