The versus This

Hi,
What is the difference between these 2 sentences?
1. The river is long.
2. This river is long.
Thanks, Fulvio

Both sentences demand more context to make complete sense. The first sentence ("The river is long") suggests that there had been an earlier conversation about the river. You would not just say "the river is long" out of the blue.
