The verb 'to shepherd'

Hi,

I did look at dictionary entries on this verb, but I'm still unsure whether it can be used in connection with people when you want to say that someone, like a teacher or mentor, for example, doesn't tell you what or how you should do, but gives you only vague suggestions about them, and so all you get is just one or at best a couple "signposts", so to speak.

Can you say that she or he only shepherds you?

(I don't mean it exclusively in a school environment; it can be a trainer for soldiers or in the navy, too.)

Thanks a lot.

  • It's not very common in everyday casual English, perhaps because it tends to suggest the peoiple being shepherded are a bit mindless or, in other words, a bit like sheep.
  • A typical usage would be eg The teacher shepherded the small children across the road .
