please is the use of the verb 'render' correct in the following sentence?

His complex personality renders him different from others.

'Render' is high-register.
'Makes' is OK for all registers.

I concur with Clive that "makes" is much more common in this context. However, I find "render" to have certain collocations that are, in fact, quite common. For example, "render useless" and "render aid/assistance."

Examples:
"Dropping my mobile phone in the swimming pool rendered (made) it useless."
"The stranded motorist was thankful to those who rendered (gave/offered) aid
