the verb "projected"

Is this correct or make any sense?

Since his dad did make it big as an actor he projected his wanting to become a star on his kid.

Thank you

It seems to me that it would make more sense as: Since his dad did not make it big as an actor, he projected his wanting to become a star on his kid.
