the verb 'having

Hi teachers

I read this sentence today in the newspaper, and my question is what is the function of 'having' in the sentence? Is it acting as a verb? If so -what is it for?

Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg, having initially denied that fake news was problematic, now wants to find a solution.

What is the reason for 'having'?

Thanks for your answer
