The verb happen

is it an impersonal verb?
in the sentence " what happened yesterday?" why is the auxiliary verb missing? maybe because we are asking about the subject as it happens in the sentence "who broke my glasses?

I'm terrible confused.

i will tell u what's the auxiliry verb! it's very easy after reading this:

"who broken my glasses"
we often use the auxiliry verbs when we don't want to repeat something>
we also use auxiliary verbs with SO and NEITHER we use it before the subject EX. "so did zed" NOT "so zed did" but u can say niether can

Hi Gabaldon,

Welcome to English Forums. I hope you can find the answers to all your questions here.

I can see no need for an auxiliary verb in the sentence 'what happened yesterday?' It is, as you say, a simple active verb, as in 'who broke my glasses' or 'what (event) occurred on this date 100 years ago?'

Hope this helps.

Relative or interogative pronouns who, what in nomonative can be subject. So in questions you ask about subject

do not use auxiliary and inversion.

But the most intresting is the use of verb happen in leterature, where the stressing of sentences is deepl you see

this verb whitout subject.Look at this ' As happened yesterday'

That would be "What has happened yesterday?" which is the present perfect tense. You cannot use the present perfect tense together with a mention of a particular time, i.e., 'yesterday'.
