Hoover is the name of a company that developed and sold this household machine. In the US, we do not use it as a verb, but it is used in British English.

It's also a noun in BrE and has become almost generic. We can say:

I've just bought a new hoover, a Dyson.

I sweep the floor with a broom and vacuum the carpeting with a vacuum (cleaner).

OK, I'll join in, too:
Philip vacuum the carpeting
We don't have any carpets; I vacuum the floor. (It works pretty well, too.)

You have a "flat" setting to the machine, and I often use that as long as I have the vacuum out.
