The use of 'why' and 'why not'

Hi,

Is it obligatory to use 'why not' when asking about the reason of a negative statement. If I simply ask 'Why?' will it be a mistake?

A: I don't want to marry you.

B: Why? (The meaning seems to be clear here, even if B did not say 'Why not?')

Best wishes, Clive
