The use of were

Is this sentence grammatically correct? What would happen if the money in your bank account were worth nothing?" The use of "were" just does not sound right to me, please advise.

Hi sanders, Welcome to English Forums.

"Were" is an example of "subjunctive mood," and is correctly used in the "if clause." In the old days, it was the required form, but now it's considered correct to replace it with the simple past "was."

Best wishes, - A.
