The use of the word "too" as adverb?

Hi. I sometimes feel awkward using the word "too" in front of an adjective. How do you assess the correctness of this use? Also, do you think the word "so" can be correct if it replaces the word "too"?

eg,

It looks to be a too nice gift for me to accept.

A lot of times I feel like turning or changing the sentence into this if I see a sentence like the one above.

It looks to be too nice of a gift for me to accept.
