The use of the word "similar"

Hello,

Is the following sentence correct?

He showed a similar level of cognition as his wife.

or

He showed a similar level of congition to that of his wife. ("that" is his wife's level of cognition.)

It seems like the first one is correct (like "He showed the same determination as his wife"), but I am confused.

Please help.
