The use of the comparitive MORE

0Why do some English speakers, North American speakers in particular, use the word MORE for regular English adjectives. I have been told that funnier, happier, clearer are not correct usage and that I should say more funny, more happy, more clear. I thought MORE was used only for English adverbs and certain adjectives that might sound odd with the ER ending. Does anyone have any thoughts on this matter?0-

  • I do think you use "more" when the word reaches three syllables though.

0Thank you for the clarification. I am actually a tech writer and I am irritated beyond belief when I send a doc for review and I receive hypercorrections throughout. I'm glad I found this forum. Thanks again.0-

0That is a great link. It has much of the same information as the 01i00Handbook of Technical Writing 02i00that I refer to often. Is this misuse of MORE common in the UK, South Africa, Australia, India, or any other English-speaking areas?0-
