The use of "the"

Often I am confused when it come to using "the". If I am speaking informally, but still want to sound educated, how important is it to use "the" in the right place? If I am writing, for cartoons or writing in other similar extremely informal situations, can I avoid the use of "the" in some places.
For example, in the sentence,
"He was the lead guitarist in the college rock band",
can I drop the second "the" ?
Or in
"What's more, the benefits of XYZ do not end with designing phase..." can I say it without using "the"? Should there be a "the" before designing?
Or in
"You can change the back-end functions anytime you want"...
is "the" really important before "back-end" ?

I would also like to know if there are some guidelines I can follow when it comes to using "the".

Note: As you can see, I have used "the" in many places while framing this question. But I face a problem when it comes to (the?) sentences like the ones given in the examples that I am confused.

I hope my question makes sense...
Vimzy.
