The use of "petition"

I was wondering if "petition" is the right word to use when I want to describe the situation when several people sign on a sheet in order to start a club in school. If not, what is the appropriate word to use? Thanks.

Hi, If the purpose of the sheet is to show the teacher that everyone wants permission to start a new club, it's a petition If the purpose is to join an existing club, it's eg a sign-up sheet. Clive

Yes, that is a petition if it is a request to the school to allow you to form the club.

It depends on your meaning. If you have permission to start the club, and you're just posting a sign-up sheet for prospective members, I wouldn't call it a "petition."

Thanks a lot. What I need is the petition for starting a new club.
