The use of "Peter out"

Hi

Is the phrase "peter out" fairly common among native speakers? Is it used in everyday conversation?

The pain petered out slowly.

Thanks,

Tom

I don't think it's very common, but it is used. I say it from time to time. I wouldn't use it to describe pain, though.

I use it when the occasion calls for it.

Mr. Smith started his speech with a strong voice, but it petered out at the end.

I'm the same. I use it from time to time when the situation arises, but I don't think I would use it about pain.
