The use of "of" in certain expressions

In the sentence "He didn't have too good of a ride. _ is the use of "of" correct? or should it be "he didnt have too good a ride."

I've always been taught the usage should be avoided. It's common in some colloquial speech. I may use it myself if I'm trying to sound "low register."

I can't say with certainty that it's incorrect.

I agree. I do hear people use "too good of a", but only very informally -- not in formal English.
