The use of Especially and Specially

Could you tell me if I've used ESPECIALLY properly in the following sentences please?

1 He can't travel anywhere, especially/specially when he doesn't have his computer at hand/on hand/handy. (can you use ESPECIALLY like that?)
2 " " without his computer.....
3 He hate her, especially when he's drunk.
4 She doesn't like traveling, especially when it's with her father.

Thank you

Hi, All your uses of 'especially' to indicate circumstances under which something happens are correct. The adverb, 'specially' is used to indicate unusual or uncommon treatment, as President Obama has his suits specially made by a tailor in Chicago. In sentence 1, however, if you are going to use the verb 'can't then I would say: He can't travel anywhere because he doesn't have his computer.

  • That is not to say that he doesn't like to travel, just that he has to have his computer in order to conduct business.
  • If what you mean is that in general he does not like to travel, but he particularly doesn't like it when he doesn't have his computer, then you would not use 'can't.
