The use of "doctor" as verb

Hi

Would you say that the use of "doctor" as a verb is natural?

He doctored the excuse/evidence, etc

Thanks,

Tom

PS: What if I dropped the yellow "a"? Would it make my sentence unnatural?

No, you can

"doctor the evidence" is fine. I've never heard "doctor the excuse".

You can drop the a, but I would keep it.
