The use of commas and participles

Dear Members, please explain me the use of commas and participles in the sentences below. Thanks in advance.
(1) Temperatures on the moon are quite extreme, ranging from 110•C to -173•C.
(2) The moon is a satellite of the earth, revolving around the earth once every twenty-nine and a half day.
(3) She sat before the mirror, turning her head from side side.
(4) Indonesia is a land of surprises, featuring the rich culture and arts of its people amidst the sandy beaches and cool mountains.
